Hagan sues Dole for defamation
(GREENSBORO)--State Senator Kay Hagan has filed a defamation lawsuit against U-S Senator Elizabeth Dole and the Elizabeth Dole Committee, Inc., after Dole declined to remove her new television ad. The ad questions why Hagan went to a fundraiser at the home of a man who serves as an adviser to the Godless Americans Political Action Committee, an atheist advocacy group. Hagan spent much of Thursday asserting her faith with reporters, calling the ad indecent.
Auditor Slams Easley Trips
(RALEIGH)— European trips taken by First Lady Mary Easley included unreasonable and excessive expenses, according to a report released Thursday by State Auditor Les Merritt. Easley took the trips to France and to Estonia and Russia with the state Department of Cultural Resources.
Early Vote Totals Skyrocket
(RALEIGH) — More than 1.6 million people have cast a ballot in North Carolina's early voting. Early voting started Oct. 16 and goes through 1 p.m. Saturday, and more people have cast an early opinion in this election than at any time in the state's history.
State To Reallocate Mental Health Money
(RALEIGH)— The Department of Health and Human Services must reallocate $8 million to $10 million in its budget to cover expenses associated with treating some patients at one of the state's four psychiatric hospitals.
Gas Shortage Lessons
(CHARLOTTE) -- It's been a rough few weeks for many in North Carolina trying to fill up their gas tanks. Observers say there are some lessons from this gas crunch. Supply disruptions caused when Hurricane Ike shut down refineries and pipelines in Texas rippled through the western half of North Carolina. Carol Gifford with Triple A Carolinas says some methods that were used to ease the shortage may be worth considering in the longer term, to avoid similar problems in the future.
John Locke Foundation: Offshore Drilling Could Drop Gas Prices
(RALEIGH) -- A poll done by Elon University indicates a majority of people in North Carolina support offshore drilling and some expect it to bring down prices. Almost 70 percent of those responding to Elon University’s poll last week said they support offshore drilling. Some said it would lead to lower prices at the pump in one to five years, others said six to ten years.

(WASHINGTON,D.C.)-Senator Elizabeth Dole says her heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones in the coordinated attacks that brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center, left the Pentagon badly damaged, and saw a final hijacked airliner crash into a Pennsylvania field.Dole says our servicemen and women deserve a good deal of credit for ensuring the country has remained safe since that fateful date.
Virginia Arrest Ends Amber Alert
(BLACKSBURG, VA) -- A four year old boy who was the subject of an AMBER Alert in North Carolina has been found. Colin Custer and his alleged abductor, 45 year old Robert William Custer II, were located in Blacksburg, VA around 6pm Monday. Officials confirmed that Custer is Colin’s father. Custer was arrested by US Marshals and Virginia State police. The boy was unharmed, according to authorities.
McCrory Says Keep Dorothea Dix Open
(RALEIGH) -- Republican candidate for Governor Pat McCrory is calling for the state to keep the Dorothea Dix Mental Facility in Raleigh open so the next Governor can make the choice of when it should close. The state was going to begin moving patients this month from Dix to the new regional mental hospital, but there have been many complaints the new hospital isn’t ready.
Local Crime Prevention Councils Seek Funding Renewal
(RALEIGH) -- There could be new life for local citizen panels overseeing juvenile crime prevention programs. The General Assembly last year completely cut funding for the Juvenile Crime Prevention Councils pending a review.
