Lexington, NC - Davidson County Senior Services Senior Dynamics program will host a SNAP Fair (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) from 9 am – 12 pm on Thursday, June 12 at the Lexington Senior Center, 555-B West Center St. Ext.  Various stations will be available including SNAP education, interactive demonstrations, screening / application assistance and much more.  Refreshments will be served.

All Davidson County residents 55 and older are encouraged to attend this free event.

Senior Services, in conjunction with Davidson County Social Services and the National Council on Aging, is seeking to increase community awareness and participation in the SNAP Program, also referred to as FNS (Food and Nutrition Services).  Senior Services’ goal is to get this information out to potential enrollees in an effort to provide much needed financial support.  “We want to give seniors who are making the decision to cut back on needed medications or other necessities another option to help put food on their tables,” states Doug Duffey, Program Director of the SNAP Initiative by Davidson County Senior Services.

In 2011, North Carolina ranked in the top ten states (9th) for the number of citizens age 60 and older who experience food insecurity. Using census data for Davidson County’s total population, roughly 65% of food insecure citizens are income-eligible for federal food assistance programs.  Data collected by Feeding America reflects that an estimated 5841 seniors 60+ in Davidson County are food insecure, with only 1379 currently enrolled in SNAP (as of December 31, 2013).  Based on the given statistics, nearly 2500 potential enrollees may be eligible for assistance.

Senior Services, a division of Davidson County Government, was established in 1975.  The organizations mission is to offer an array of programs and services to older adults regarding their well-being, independence, involvement in their community and the ability for them to remain in their own home.
