Davidson County Department of Senior Services Senior Dynamics program is hosting the second annual balloon release in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  This event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. June 13 at the Lexington Senior Center, 555-B W. Center St. Ext. and the Thomasville Senior Center, 211 W. Colonial Dr.  The balloon release is sponsored by Alston Brook Nursing and Rehabilitation.

All Davidson County residents are invited to participate at either senior center and release a purple balloon in support of the cause.  There is no cost to participate and light refreshments will be provided.

Each year, more than two million vulnerable and older adults are victims of abuse, neglect, and exploitation and that is just those that are reported. According to national statistics, elder abuse is grossly under reported because vulnerable and older adults who are being abused find it very difficult to tell anyone due to shame and fear. In 2013 Davidson County received 399 reports of elder abuse.  The responsibility exists to support the safety, welfare and dignity of seniors. Senior Services urge all citizens to work together to help protect older adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation.  Join staff and senior center participants on June 13 to launch a balloon to raise awareness on this growing problem in Davidson County.

As part of the elder abuse awareness campaign in Davidson County, free decals are available to local businesses who would like to display it on their window or door.  Please contact the Lexington Senior Center at 242-2290 if your business would like to participate.  Elder Abuse Awareness Kits, which include a bookmark, purple ribbon and wristband, are also available for sale in the Lexington and Thomasville Senior Centers for only $1.
