Davidson County Community College will offer a Healthcare Interpreting Certificate as part of its Continuing Education program beginning this fall.

The certificate program starts August 18 and will run through July 2015. Those who enroll will take seven courses, which are: Introduction to Healthcare Interpreting, Medical Terminology for Interpreters, Interpreting in a Healthcare Environment, Cultural Health Habits of the Hispanic/Latino Patient I, Cultural Health Habits of the Hispanic/Latino Patient II, Clinical Practicum I and Clinical Practicum II.

Individuals who successfully complete the certificate program will meet healthcare interpreting education requirements to test for both the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). Students may also be eligible for curriculum credit in the Healthcare Interpreting degree program.

“We are pleased to offer the Healthcare Interpreting Certificate program to our community members,” says Becky Daley, associate dean of Health, Wellness and Public Safety. “This program provides students a pathway to two nationally recognized certifications and is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in working in the field of Healthcare Interpreting.”

DCCC will offer all courses online with the exception of Practicums I and II. Those who wish to pursue the Healthcare Interpreting Certificate should be bilingual with proficiencies in both English and Spanish. Persons who do not wish to pursue certification, but are interested in taking individual courses may do so provided that all prerequisites are met.
